Sorrowful Mysteries - Crowning with Thorns
The soldiers took him inside the courtyard known as the praetorium and called the rest of their companions. They clothed him in a purple cloak and twisting a crown of thorns, they forced it into his head. Then they began saluting him, "Long life to the King of the Jews!" With a stick they gave him blows on the head and spat on him; then they knelt down pretending to worship him.
When they had finished mocking him, they pulled off the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him.
Mark 15:16 - 20
Jesus in this moment of sorrow has been beaten nearly unconscious and then he is made fool of, draped in purple, a reed stuck in his hand and a crown of thorns pushed into his scalp. He is spit on, taunted and mocked, insulted, his face slapped and beaten. He is becoming unrecognizable as Jesus, as a human being. Through unspeakable suffering, he brings to fulfillment the Father's plan of salvation. He has grasped our sorrows so deeply that he shares them, assumes them, gives them meaning, transforms them into possibility of life and communion with God.
From that day, every human generation has been called to declare itself before that "man" crowned with thorns. No one can remain neutral. One must declare oneself. And not only with words but with one's life. The Christian accepts the crown of thorns on his head, when he knows how to mortify his arrogance, his pride, the various forms of selfishness and hedonism, which end up destroying him as a person and often lead him to be cruel to others.
